It has something to do with a girl. Who was just out of reach.
lyrics
I went down one day to the mouth of the bay just intending to sit on the beach
And that's when I saw her, a mile or so offshore, the girl who was just out of reach
I called to her softly "Do you come here often?"
"Not really," she said with a sigh.
"In fact, I'm marooned here, entrapped and entombed here," she said, with a glint in her eye
"Can I assist you?" I asked quite persistently, admiring her long golden hair
"Oh please don't you spoil me," she answered quite coyly, "but I'm here and you're over there."
"Simple," I said, pulled my shirt over my head and jumped in the sea with a splash
But as I grew nearer, it was clearer and clearer my actions had been rather rash
The waters were choppy, one might just say stroppy, I found to my shock and dismay
That the tide it had caught me, relentlessly brought me right back to the mouth of the bay
Hard as I might, I put up a fight but I found myself back on the beach
And still out to sea, just as far as could be, was the girl who was just out of reach
